Derek Trucks, Butch's nephew, started playing slide guitar when he was less than ten years old, and was performing with people like Buddy Guy and the Allman Brothers Band when he was only twelve! Many people compare Derek's ability to play soulful slide guitar to that of Duane Allman, which is flattering to Derek, yet he is clearly his own man. He has done everything from ABB covers to his own material, showing a distinct Coltrane influence. He was a frequent guest player with the Brothers and after Jack Pearson left the band after the March '99 Beacon run, Derek was tapped to fill the open guitarist slot.
